Course content:

In-depth discussion on matching your rifle type and caliber to the game you’re pursuing. Proper fitting of the scope to the rifle and the scoped rifle to you.  Does your rifle fit you properly? Most don’t so we will shed light on this.

Optics:

We cover everything you need to know.

What scope do you need?  Can one scope do it all?  What style of reticle; magnification; physical length, weight; adjustable turrets or not; first focal plane, second focal plane; parallax; multiple stadia lines; BDC; Mils/MOA/Inches. There’s a lot to think about.  We’ll help you make it simple.

Bullets and ballistics:

What distance should you sight your zero to and why.  Range zero vs. hunt location zero.  Knowing your sights height over bore and how it equates to point of aim (POA) vs. point of impact (POI).  Max point-blank range – what it means and how to use it properly.  Calculating target distance.  Calculating bullet drop.  How bullet weight and design effect bullet flight path.

Ethical shooting distance and shot placement.  Understanding what your shooting conditions can do to your bullet flight.  Angular deviation, uphill, downhill. The effects of wind on your bullet.

Dry fire / Live fire:

Sight in rifles and/or confirm zero.  You will shoot at various distances starting at 20 yards out to 200 yards.  Seeing the importance of having a hunting partner with a spotting scope or other optics.  Calling your shots.

Shooting positions:

Learning basic shooting positions and then knowing how to use your equipment (backpack, shooting sticks, clothes) or other objects (trees, rocks, bushes) to facilitate a good shot.  Each student will shoot a course of fire at different type targets at different distances some known some unknown.

 Additional equipment:

Spotting scope (optional), binoculars.  Items you would normally carry in the field – backpack, hiking poles (can be used as shooting sticks).  Any other shooting supplies you normally take to the range.  Also, our weather changes quickly.  Bring water, sunscreen, lunch and a good attitude.
